Every great artist doesn't last long but that doesn't diminishes his greatness in any way. Kumar sanu was one of them. He may have stopped working now but he was undisputed boss during the 90s, the most conservative yet romantic decade of bollywood. It was the time when rajshree productions made movies like Maine pyar kiya, Hum aapke hain kaun, Hum sath sath hain ,typical family flicks with great success. karan johar introduced the 'friendship turning into love' concept in movies like kuch kuch hota hai. Shahrukh & kajol were THE jodi & still favorite of many. aamir was at his cheeky best in his starting movies like jo jeeta wohi sikandar & salman was the only hero into body building..But for me the most striking feature of 90s was its music, first time i heard songs of 1942 a love story kumar sanu became my instant favorite.. ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga jaisa khilta gulab ... what a song that was...then it was do dil mil rahein hain from pardes. his songs from aashiqui were all hits..... kathai aankhon wali ek ladki its slightly less known song but sanu's voice coupled with beautiful expression from shahrukh made it really watchable.. tum mile dil khile ..is another one,...Ek din aap yun hi mil jayenge............ best thing about kumar sanu was that almost 90% of his songs were better than average so its hard to single out a few of them
As sanu was nearing the end of his short but brilliant career, sonu nigam emerged. he had good looks along with great voice..... my didi became one of his fans more for his looks i guess.....but he had such a voice that i felt like he was quickly replacing kumar sanu as my favorite..... his mujhe raat din is awesome and still one of my favorites... then his album deewana had some beautiful music..kal ho na ho though is simple in musical terms but with great wordings along with sonu's voice makes it a top song.. panchi nadiyaan from refugee,.. suraj hua madham...resham si hai ye hawayein sanam ..the list can be endless ..
apart from kumar sanu and sonu nigam other prolific singer whom i like is udit narayan...his Ae ajnabi from dil se and chaha hai tujhko deserved national award..recenly K.K has given some awesome numbers like Tu mujhe soch kabhi... Shantanu mukhrjee or Shaan, as he is usually called, is also very good. his Tanha dil has always been in my playlist... Recently atif aslam and rahat fateh ali khan has given some terrific numbers like kuch is tarah ,o re piya, tu jaane na,
Strings the pakistani band was my favorite band.. dhaani kept ringing in my ears all day and till today i can't single out the reason... then i watched euphoria...oh god they were so original everything about euphoria was indian...Maeri,dhoom pichak dhoom, kabhi aana tu meri gully, kaise bhulegi mera naam, raja rani, bewafa, dil jo toota, chuimui si tum and many more their performance was uninhibited.. still today when i cant think of anything to do i watch videos of euphoria
Then there is evergreen voice of jagjit singh and pankaj uddhas. hoshwalon ko khabar kya, jab samne tum, meri aankhon ne chuna hai ,chithi na koi sandesh, honthon se chulo tum,kahin kahin se har chehra, tum itna jo muskura rahe are some of his songs i listen again & again. pankaj udhhas is all about soothing music, his aur ahista, chupke chupke videos are good ones.
i may have forgotten to mention many good songs because there are more than 400 songs in my playlist and i just randomly play any of them when ever i get time .recently K.K has been the best of lot for his performance in ZNMD and guzzarish..music & bollywood changes with time but music of 90s was something different....those were the days...........
